What each format actually does
An explainer video compresses a topic into a story. Someone picked the examples, the pacing, the moment the penny should drop. That is real work, and good videos do it well. There are whole taxonomies of them, animated, whiteboard, screencast, and people genuinely ask what the different types of explainer videos are.
A simulation does something else. It runs a handful of simple rules, live, and lets you poke at them. No narrator. The system itself answers.

Why steering beats watching for complex systems
Some topics survive compression into a story. Complex systems mostly do not.
Take flocking. A video can show you that three simple rules make birds move as one shape. Nice. But the moment it clicks is when you drag the alignment slider down yourself and the flock dissolves into noise, then drag it back and watch order return. You did that. The rule stopped being a sentence and became a lever.
That is the honest limit of even great videos: the "what if" stays hypothetical. What if fewer agents? What if more noise? In a video, the editor decided which of those questions get answered. In a simulation, you just try.
When a video is the better tool
Fair is fair. Videos win when you want the history, the people, the story arc of an idea. They win when you have seven minutes on a train. And they win as an entry point: many people meet emergence or cellular automata through a video first, and that is a good first meeting.
The formats also stack. Watch a video to hear why a system matters. Then open a simulation to feel how it behaves. The order matters less than doing both.
How to try the difference yourself

- Pick one system you think you understand from videos, say flocking or traffic jams
- Open a playable simulation of it and change one parameter at a time
- Predict out loud what will happen before each change
- Count how often the system surprises you
